Brawn GP - Mercedes set to make F1 announcement

While typing this the Mercedes board are about to make an announcement regarding it's F1 future. It's muted that the announcement will be in regards to their buy in of the Brawn GP team. Specualtion is rife this morning that they will also announce the driver line up and that Jenson may even be on the move to McLaren to partner Lewis. I don't understand the move personally as this would move Brawn GP backwards in the garage allocation with JB taking the 1 and 2 numbers to McLaren. Why would Mercedes buy into BGP to strengthen their grasp on the ownership of an F1 team only to push out the driver the team is built around?

Brawn GP - Interlagos - Race

Jenson and Brawn GP took both the drivers and constructors championships in an awesome race that saw Jenson storm from 14th to 5th. I'm still away on holiday and the bar where we are staying was due to play the football whilst the race was on. We managed to blag them to change it for the GP :) What a race! Jenson made some amazing overtakes into turn 1 cementing the reason why he is now the drivers champion. Rubens was unfortunate to get a puncture late on in the race which dropped him too far down the order for him to continue his championship challenge. Meanwhile with both Brawn drivers scoring it left RBR with no chance of winning the constructors title even with Webber doing a sterling job to win the race.

RealBrawnGP.com - Phil does Bangers 4 Ben

Phil over at http://www.realbrawngp.com/ is partaking in Bangers4Ben. Here's what he wrote:

Bangers4BEN is an industry event, where those in the motor trade gather together in some old, knackered car and thrash it to within an inch of its life. Or beyond.

With a spending limit of £250 (€290/$415), to include the car, repairs, MOT, etc., the journey could be tough. Ah yes, the journey - it's that famous run from, er, Ascot to John O'Groats. We'll then turn round and head to Brands Hatch, where we'll put in a few celbratory laps.

All of this will be done in November, where the rain/snow will undoubtedly play its part.

Finally, once we've finished, all the cars will be sent to BCA Auctions to be sold off.

It's all a great deal of fun, but there's a very serious point. All proceeds, including form the auction sales, will go to BEN, the Motor and Allied Trades Benevolent Fund, and we'll be stopping off at one of their residential homes to brighten up a few peoples day. to see the work BEN does, take a look at BEN.org.uk.

We're now planning our attack, and already have support from some people, including Mitchell Signs who supported us in our previous Staples2Naples rally effort for SPARKS.

We'll obviously be taking donations for BEN before too long but, in the meantime, we'll also gladly take offers of support for the rally. Especially if you have an early Ford Mondeo saloon in blue. Then we'd really like to hear from you!

Should you feel the need to give to this very worthy cause please see here:

Suzuka - Post Qualifying Grid

Ruben's and Jenson along with Alonso, Sutil and Buemi have all received a 5 place grid penalty for the incident regarding Buemi and waved yellow flags. Heikki has also changed his gearbox along with Luizzi, Glock didn't put a time in Q3 so is demoted to the rear of the grid should he be fit. So how does the grid shape up now? Well we are all a little confused with the grid as so many people are moving backwards and forwards. The biggest problem I have working out the grid is the order in who takes the penalties as this will also effect the order in which they drop down the grid. I have worked it out in 3 different ways so far so i'm not going to post anything all I will say is I don't think it will hurt BGP too badly.

Brawn GP - Qualifying - Suzuka

Qualifying was a drmatic event with 3 red flag incidents making the Q2 and Q3 sessions very stop, start affairs. Degner seems to be an area that is affecting car stability as the weight shifts forward the cars are bottomining out and heading off line onto the curbing, as soon as this occurs the car is basically becoming a train using the kerb as it's track and sending the drivers off onto the gravel. (Due to FP1 and 2 being washed out, little setup work has been done, it appears some of the teams have gone to far with their adjustments and set the car too low so when they do come into Degner unstablised in braking they are losing control)
Jaime bought Q2 to a halt as he headed straight off the circuit at Degner head on into the barriers. Q2 resumed with a few drivers venturing back out only to be compromised again by another red flag. This time Timo had headed off circuit and found his Toyota wedged in the tyre wall of the final corner. Timo was flown to hospital with an injured leg. Q2 continued with BGP leaving it to the last minute to re-emmerge only giving Jense and Rube's enough time for 1 flying lap. Both times are now in question by the race stewards as whilst they were putting in these flying laps Sebastian Buemi put his car in the wall just before 130R, he will also be under investigation as he continued to drive the stricken Torro Rosso around the circuit back to the pits with a missing front wing, side damage and a punctured rear tyre. The yellow flags were waving during this time putting into question the 2 BGP drivers times.
Q3 born yet a further red flag with Heikki hitting the tyre wall at Degner in a similar but not so fast accident as Jaime already had. This once again compromised everyone's qualifying strategies and left BGP to do one flying lap once again bringing in a 5th for Rubens and 7th for Jenson.

Tomorrows race is tee'd up to be a fantastic race now, I await the fuel loads to see how the pit stops may play into everyone's strategies. The other things to consider are Jarno in 2nd place will almost certainly be overtaken off the grid by Lewis's KERS enabled McLaren and since for the first time in a while Jarno won't be able to select a fuel load can he keep relative pace? or will the Trulli train have 17 other frustrated passengers behind him whilst he protects his tyres and position? Factor in that due to Parc Ferme rules no height adjustments will occur on the cars could we have further Degner casualties? Prompting the lengthy inclusion of the safety car?

Brawn GP - Singapore - Qualifying

A day to forget really for Brawn GP, this really could be the race that put the title beyond Red Bull Racing unfortunately Jenson really struggled with the balance of the car through last practice and Qualifying. Jenson went out of qualifying in Q2 and took 12th place but with the threat of Kimi in 13th with KERS. Rubens had to change his gearbox incurring a 5 place grid penalty meaning even if he stole pole he would be demoted to sixth. However Rubens bought the season to an end with a red flag when he put his BGP001-3 in the wall whilst laying 5th on the board demoting him to 10th on the grid.

Brawn GP - Singapore - News

Unfortunately overnight the team had to take the choice to replace Rubens gearbox. Rumours of it's demise were coming through at Monza but it lasted the distance. This means that Rubens will forfeit 5 places on the grid and so he must now run his optimal race strategy to preserve any chance of winning the race. The team had already factored this into any strategy calls they may have to make so are fully ready with the right strategy for the job.

Brawn GP - Practice 1 Singapore

An ironic crash placement for Romain Grosjean bought a red flag to part of the 1st Session in Singapore but after his car was removed from the circuit Rubens and Jenson set about pounding the times in. Both seem to run some fairly long stints providing good times even with the dusty surface that Singapore provides. Both ran without the rear wheel fairings in an attempt to keep the brake temperature down. They also only ran on the prime tyre so the option should get it's 1st outing in FP2. A solid 1st and 2nd in FP1 bodes well for the weekend ahead.

Brawn GP - If anyone can Canon can

For the older F1 fans out there cast your mind back to the 80's Williams cars and you will remember seeing the rear wing being emblazened with the Canon sponsorship. Brawn GP are using their 1 race sponsorship strategy to full effect again to promote CANON whilst at the Singapore GP in a rumoured $100,000 deal. This will see the Sidepod's of the BGP001 used as a sponsorship platform for the 1st time this season.

Melvyn Ho, Vice President, Consumer Imaging and Information Group, Canon Singapore

"The Singapore Grand Prix is one of the most visually distinctive races in the world and, as the leader in digital imaging, the race weekend is the perfect showcase for Canon. We are extremely proud to be working with the current World Championship leaders Brawn GP and respect the skill, vision and engineering excellence that have made Ross Brawn and his team so successful this season. Like Brawn GP, Canon brings innovation to the marketplace and as leaders in our respective fields, we look forward to a fruitful and rewarding relationship together."

Further down the line Brawn GP have already secured another 1 race deal with Cervejaria Petrópolis for their Itaipava beer brand at the Brazilian GP. This deal is rumoured to be netting BGP around $150,000.

Douglas Costa, Corporate Marketing Manager at Cervejaria Petrópolis

“We are very pleased to have agreed the partnership between Cervejaria Petrópolis and Brawn GP for the Brazilian Grand Prix. Raising awareness of the Itaipava brand and our responsible driving message through our involvement in motorsport is extremely important to our company strategy and our first venture in Formula One is designed to take this awareness to a wider audience through the global reach of the sport. We look forward to using the opportunity and prestige of working with the current Formula One World Championship leaders for our Itaipava brand.”

Brawn GP - Monza Weekend

Firstly another apology for my lack of presence during the Monza weekend, however you will notice from my previous blog posts that I ventured to Italy to watch the race. For any F1 fan out there I can strongly recommend the experience but also noted that I personally found plus and negative points to the Italian GP. I'll apologise in advance for what is easily going to be my longest ever blog post but i'm sure you will appreciate a little of what is on offer.

We flew out of Luton airport on the Wednesday and arrived in Italy in the evening armed with my girlfriend (Louise), one of her girlie friends (Anna), an arrangement of BAR/Honda and Brawn GP apparel and most importantly an Italian phrase book. Our B&B was apparently not far from the Airport but we decided as it was late/dark we would use a cab to get there which to be honest I'm glad we did as although it wasn't far I would have struggled to get my bearings initially.

We arrived with the cab driver at what appeared to be a bus depot (it was) we stumbled around the corner in the dark after despensing of the cab driver with €15 (which may I add seemed a bit steep at the time, oh well you win some, you lose some) We had a gander and could only see the bus depot office so started to edge back around the corner only to be shouted at in Italian by a guy from the bus depot office, I assumed he was waving at us so went to see him. At this point I should point out that we booked our accomodation through http://www.hostelworld.com/ my girlfriend had read through a few recent reviews a few days before we left and most peoples comments pointed to the fact they spoke little to no English. I have no problem with that being in their country I should adopt their ways. The booking for the room was made in Anna's name so she took to the English approuch of trying a mixture of English, loud words, pointing and adding 'o' to the end of everything to get our 2 room keys. It did however work and i'm sure the guy knew a little more English than he was letting on. He proceeded to walk us back out onto the street and show us how to use a locked gate and then round to the front of the B&B showing us the entrance etc. We walked up through the 1st set of stairs which was coupling the breakfast area with the hallway and he pointed to the clock "Breakfast Start" points at the 7 "Breakfast Ends" points at the 10, sorted at least we knew when to come down for Breakie. He then showed us our rooms a little further on upstairs and round the hall. I have to say for what we paid it was a steal (€50 euro per night for me and Lou) We then decided lets have a quick venture out and see what's local, we spent the next hour i'd say wondering off literally nowhere and seeing very little, so we wondered on back to the B&B. As it was around 12ish by now we decided it best to get some kip and have a reccy in the morning.

A combination of me not flying well and still having sore ears, being tired from work and generally wanting a lazy start we arose for breakfast at 9.50AM luckily the clock in the breakfast area wasn't working so I showed the lady at breakfast my GMT un adjusted watch when she asked the time (cheeky I know, but she fell for it) Breakfast was a simple affair, cereal, toast, tea (which the Italians by the way have no concept of how to make) or coffee (I can't drink coffee as it gives me headaches) and a Treacle style tart (which no-one fell in love with until around 4 days later when some Norweigen guys decided to demolish it).

After breakfast we all got ready and thought we would try to get to the circuit for the pit lane walk / driver signings. By this time I had studied a map I had found in reception and decided that I was gonna walk into Bergamo. The girls didn't seem overly fazed by the idea at the time either so we headed off at a brisk pace with map in hand. 40 minutes later we arrived at Bergamo station by which time I'd imagine it to be around 11.30 we jumped the train to Monza (€6.20 return each) and arrived around 12.30 we walked out into the taxi rank to find it deserted, so we stood around for 5 mins to find that still no-one was coming. By this time we had bumped into a fellow brit and his girlfriend. At this point I knew that getting to Monza may be tricky (I had heard rumours that it could be difficult on a Thursday) We decided that the rumblings coming from our stomachs really needed addressing so went off in search of pizza. We found a lovely place just up from the station leading into the town and the guy spoke English very well. I proceeded to have a lovely Pizza with sausage topping, Louise had a Margharita and Anna a Salad. As we were leaving the restaurant by chance we asked if the guy could arrange us a taxi which he tried but failed. He then sent us on to find the 204/244 bus just down the road that nomally takes passengers to Vedano which is just outside the circuit. We went to get our 75 minute bus ticket from the local tobbaconist and headed for the stop. Now this is where the problem lay, as we had been having pizza the time had been ticking away and it was now 3ish and we knew that the pit lane closed at 5pm. We watched as all the other buses that usually used the stop came and went and then came and went some more until after an hour we realised that we simply were not going to make it and so bumped the idea on the head and headed back dissapointed to Bergamo for some well deserved Dinner. That evening a few of our other friends were due to fly in (Keir and Dave) Keir had been to Monza the previous 4 years and Dave the previous 2 years so these guys knew how to get around and would make the next few days a little easier.

Friday (Practice 1 & 2) - We decided that this trip was to be done as cheaply as possible (without being a scrooge) before we even booked the flights (£100 Ryanair for the 3 of us with 2 checked bags by the way) so we got general admission tickets something that Keir and Dave had also suggested. We left early so we could get to the circuit ready for the 1st session at 10am (which we barely made) and headed straight to a grandstand at Rettifilo (as on a friday with general admission you can sit anywhere) it wasn't long though before we moved on around the circuit to Second Variante to continue watching the action before heading around the Lesmo corners and onto Ascari where we sat for 2nd practice. This was the first time i'd really noticed the intense heat difference and was honestly feeling a little sapped from the heat. The girls sought some refuge under a tree whilst I watched from a 2nd practice in grandstand on the exit of Ascari (it was fantastic to watch the cars coming through these corners loaded and unloaded on the exits, a bit like watching from Becketts like I had 2 years previously) With the heat having taken it's toll on all of us we decided to head back to Bergamo and call it a day.

Saturday (Practice 3 & Qualifying) - After the heat from Friday taking it's toll on most of us we decided to skip P3 and get into the circuit at a sensible time and find a good position to watch qually. My mind had already been made up that I wanted to watch from Second Variante and duly hung off the side of one of the small metal erected general admission stands at the corner, with a great view of both straights leading in and the entrance/exits of the chicane. I could also see the large TV screen opposite, for viewing whilst the cars weren't buzzing by. Qually was pretty standard form for the 09 season seeing the usual suspects slide out in Q1 & Q2 only Fisi being in the red car not the Force India. Q3 obviously being the most important section to watch out for I stood there with my fingers crossed for a good result whilst noticing that the temperature seemed to be dropping off slightly. A hectic Q3 session without being able to hear times/commentary left Rubens in 5th and Jenson in 6th. The biggest issues I could forsee without the fuel load announcements were the KERS cars of Lewis on Pole, Kimi in 3rd and Heikki in 4th. Once qually was over I wanted to stick around for the GP2 race but that was to be to no avail when the my earlier feeling of the lowering in temperature had culminated in what can only be described as a torrential downpour. Luckily the Italians have been in this situation a few too many times and had their tau paulin at the ready, they swiftly went to work turning the metal stands into covered stands and a place of refuge. Quite wet and hungry myself, Lou and Anna decided it best to trudge off the circuit and head back to Bergamo for a well deserved feed, rest and change of clothes. Keir and Dave stayed on a watched the GP2 cars having lets say a little fun on the rain drenched circuit.

Sunday (Race Day) - Obviously with only general admission tickets we knew that getting to the circuit late was not an option. My personal option of where to view the race from was once again at Second Variante. We left the B&B at around 6.30am getting a taxi into Bergamo station to save our legs and time to get the train to Monza which we had already purchased the tickets for the previous evening. Getting to the circuit once in Monza was less stressful than I had imagined it to be with more buses available than you could shake a stick at. We headed straight for Second Variante arriving at the circuit now at around 9am whilst Dave and Keir had already headed off to try and get down at Ascari. Neither of the groups managed to get where we desired as the crowds had already filtered in and started taking up camp. We decided to meet somewhere in the middle, which Dave called us about 10 minutes later declaring they had found a suitable spot at Lesmo 2 just leading out of the corner onto the straight with a decent view of the TV screen too. This is where we decided to stay and watched all of the support races from too in anticipation for the main event.
Whilst the drivers came out for the parade we all made our Race Winner predictions. (Dave had given us the fuel loads the night previous from his mobile phone) Dave took Kimi, Lou took Lewis, Keir I believe took Heikki. I obviously chose Rubens but had worked out from the fuel loads that Rubens was 1 stopping which they must not have. Heikki was clearly in the better position should he be able to hold off Rubens and Jenson and manage the tyres but we obviously now know how that turned out.
A great race and a great place to watch the action from seeing the drivers squirming around on the exit of the second Lesmo was great. Dave's previous proclomation that Rubens had no chance was obviously wrong and William Hill once again owed me some money (12/1 for a Rubens win)
Another great 1-2 result for Brawn GP with Rubens in First and Jenson in 2nd!

After the race the crowd dispersed onto the circuit but both myself and Lou decided not to as the heat had been quite enough for us for 1 day. Dave, Keir and Anna however went off round towards Lesmo 1 to see the wreckage of Lewis's car to discover that people were only looking and not trying to find any bits. Dave now has Lewis's radio aerial in his possession along with a few other shards of carbon fibre.

All in all a fantastic experience but I must point out that if you are shy of walking this is not the GP circuit for you. I would return to Monza but may tend to favour a granstand ticket next time over a general admission ticket.

On Monday and Tuesday me and Lou did some tourist bits to complete the holiday with a trip to Milan on Monday and trip to the old town of Bergamo on Tuesday.

I haven't got the camera to hand in order to upload the pictures so if you check back I will add these at a later time.

Brawn GP - Mercedes Benz Buying In?

Well speculation has been rife over the past few days about a rumoured deal with Mercedes. It appears this may be coming to fruition with Mercedes taking an equity share in the team much like they have with McLaren. I have been waiting for some reliable sources to go live with the rumour and now we have one see here: www.autosport.com

'Reports first emerged about the plans this morning in The Daily Telegraph, and sources have confirmed to AUTOSPORT that talks are at an advanced stage for the car company to take a shareholding in the team.'

'Mercedes-Benz itself denied that the plan was for a full-blown buyout of Brawn, but did not rule out an equity-type deal.'

Brawn GP - Upgrades

For Valencia Brawn GP bought in the sidepod airflow conditioners you can see pictured above or in the video below. These have been used for a while by BGP's rivals.

Further to this BGP were testing the effectiveness of the shark fin style engine cover used by RBR on the RB5 during practice on Friday at Spa. The cover wasn't used during the race. As you can see in the picture the option for angle adjustment of the rear wing whilst testing is also available

Obviously minor adjustments to the front and rear wings have been undertaken to suit the various circuits.

Firstly my apologies for my poor and lack of coverage for this weekends Belgian GP. Being bank holiday here in the UK and myself being in a tourism lead job meant I missed most of qualifying myself and had little time to update the blog.

Spa provided us with a rain free race day this year, however the drama was to be caused by the events on track and not the weather. Rubens starting in 4th but with the lightest car on the grid really needed to get a good launch into turn 1. Jenson on the other hand down in 14th needed a good launch and plenty of luck to not get collected into turn 1. Unfortunately Rubens found his car in anti stall once again after dumping the clutch to get away off the line, leaving him last on the grid.

Rubens commenting on the situation:
"Third time that we have that and I feel sorry really, it shouldn't happen," Barrichello told the BBC. "But honestly I haven't checked what happened but it was pretty much the same thing as the last races that I had [the slow start].

"I dumped the clutch and the anti-stall comes in and the car is not moving."

Jenson however had a stellar start and managed to eek his way into 8th by the 1st turn. However he wasn't prepared for what was about to come at Les Combes, Romain Grosjean punted Jenson from behind putting him into a spin which was also a catalyst for the dimise of Lewis Hamilton and Jaimie Alguersuari's departure from the race.

Jenson had the following to say about the incident and the race weekend:
"It can always be worse," Button said. "Also it could have been a lot better. Rubens got a bad start, had a problem and I was up in 12th or 11th, and it could have been a good race for me until I got hit at turn five."

He added: "After the accident now it's a relief, but having Rubens behind at the start was a good position to be in, and just behind the Red Bulls as well. So it was very disappointing when I actually crashed, but then to watch the race after...

"Rubens obviously got a couple of points, then Red Bull made a mistake in the pit stop and he wasn't able to score any points, which is good for the championship.

"This is a race we expected the Red Bulls to easily win, so it shows that a lot of teams are strong now.

"And when your weekend doesn't go perfectly, like it didn't for the Red Bulls because they had a bad position after qualifying, it's very difficult to win from that far back."

The Briton made contact with Renault's Romain Grosjean on the first lap, and the Frenchman said Button had taken him out of the race.

But the Brawn driver saw things differently.

"I can't believe he's blaming me. He hit me, but to be fair I don't really care. It's not really important. I didn't score any points, and that's what's important."

The four car incident prompted the release of the safety car whilst the cars and debris were removed from the track. Rubens used this as a a window of opportunity to adjust his strategy as whilst down in last place he could catch up to the back of the pack with more fuel and a fresh set of tyres. Rubens then proceeded to provide in my opinion a Spa masterclass using the BGP001 to full effect with some stellar laps and fantastic overtakes. I wonder if he had only lost a few places on the grid and remained on strategy how this fantastic driving would have panned out in the race. Rubens continued to push to the last with only an oil leak at the end of the race causing a smoke plume to follow him for the last 2 laps. Prior to this he had been hounding down Heikki and I believe would have passed the McLaren driver had he not had to turn it down to make it to the end of the race.

Sebastian Vettel was the only Red Bull Racing driver to score points at Spa so the constructors and drivers championship was not adjusted greatly. This is great news for both Brawn GP and Jenson Button, although I do feel that the way Rubens drove at Spa his championship points haul deserved a little more boost.

Brawn GP - Spa - Qualifying

A very mixed up grid was formed for the Belgian GP with Fisichella taking a suprise pole position whilst a lot of the front runners languished towards the middle of the grid. Rubens aggressive strategy paid off and put him the mix at 4th while Jenson failed to make Q3 leaving him exposed in 14th. The saving grace that RBR didn't fair overly well either taking 8th and 9th and reducing the chances of Jenson losing too many points in the drivers championship to them. This is Rubens chance to really unhinge the championship and swing the door wide open in his favour.

Brawn GP - 2010 Sponsorship/Funding Secure

In an interview with http://www.autosport.com/ Nick Fry has alluded to the fact that 2010 and beyond are secure with deals already done to provide sponsorship to the team.

Q. You've won seven races out of the 11 held so far this year, but there is still a lot of white space on the car. Is there any concern about funding for this year or next year?

NF: We have zero worries on funding for this year, next year, the year after, and the year after that. I smile when people talk about money, because we've always had the finances for this year, and neither Ross nor I would not have taken on the team if we did not have the money for this year. We've signed some nice contracts, and those will come out into the open when we launch the car next year, but we will see what happens. There is zero worry on our side.

Q. Were those new sponsors signed over the summer break?

NF: When you are asking people for large amounts of money, it doesn't generally happen in five minutes. We've been talking to people from the beginning of this year when our situation changed, and it is fair to say that things have crystallized in the last month or so. I said at the beginning of the year that we were in the enviable position that we didn't have to hurry.

We were well covered for this year, and were covered well into next year, so it wasn't a situation where we had to jump at things that we were not quite sure about. I am pleased about the work we've done, and I think there is more to come as well. So, we've got an assured future from a financial and commercial point of view.

Q. Will Virgin be on the car next year?

NF: No.

Q. Definitely not?

NF: We've had a great relationship with Virgin. You have noticed different stickers from Virgin on the car over the year, and that is the result of additional requests from their side, which has increased our income as well which is nice. I think they have had a great initiation into F1, and we are helping where we can in advice about what they can do with Manor. I really do hope they are successful not only next year but beyond, because they are a good company and it is a good company for F1 to have.

Brawn GP - Valencia - Great Win for Rubens

From start to finish this has been a great performance for Rubens all weekend. I made the prediction earlier in the week and took a bet at 25/1 so i'm happy having £26 back now :)
Again before the start of the race i mentioned it on twitter that I still believed Rubens would have the measure of the McLarens. Congratulations to Rubens first and foremost but also a big well done to the team and Jenson for a 7th place finish.

Brawn GP - Valencia - Pre Race Reflection

Hi BGP fans, with Rubens taking 3rd on a much heavier fuel load than the 2 McLarens 3rd is a great result. Jenson however only managed to get 1 hot lap in at the end of Q3 which compromised his result and leaves him down in 5th and in the clutches of Kimi and his KERS enabled Ferrari.
Cast your mind back however to before the tyre temperature issues arose and the BGP001 was great at making the tyres last. IF it's right that the setups have equalised and the BGP001's performance is back to how it was it could make for a very interesting race.
Rubens and Jenson just need to drive their own races managing the tyre wear as usual whilst everyone else will have trouble with rear graining (appears to have been an issue for most teams during Friday and Saturday) They can bide their time whilst the others simply grain up and fall off the timings/circuit.

Valencia - Free Practice 1

Good morning BGP fans it seems like an eternity since the last race but now it's here upon us. Free Practice 1 as usual for a street circuit was very dusty so we really only saw the boys performing towards the latter stage of Practice. They were working hard with different setups to see what has been the problem over the last few races. Jenson switching front wings at least 3 times at my count. Pace seemed ok but as usual we don't the fuel loads being tested with and also the relativity to the rivals. The biggest stand out upgrade to me was the addition of air flow conditioners to the side of the sidepods like that we have seen on virtually every other car so far this season. As soon as some pictures are available I'll post them up for comparison.
Towards the end of the session Rubens had some issues with his gearbox and not being able to select neutral. Lets hope its electrical and not going to be a change.

Valencia - Jenson believes a solution could have been found

"Well, after the break and after the two weeks when they couldn't work at the factory, they spent a few days to work on the car and come up with some ideas," said Button ahead of this weekend's European Grand Prix.

"Then I spoke to my engineer 'Shov' (Andy Shovlin) last Monday, and we ran through everything and what we had for this circuit aerodynamically in terms of improvements. And also the step by step over the season in terms of where we have gone with the car mechanically – the ride, the weight distribution and the rest of the mechanical set-up.

"We ran through everything, and saw a bit of a trend, so we think we know some of the reasons for our issues with tyre temperature. Normally, going in the direction that we have gone is the preferred route because you are looking after the tyres, but with the way the tyres are you need to be aggressive with them. You need to get them to work and you need to get them into their working range – otherwise the aerodynamic improvements you have on the car mean nothing because the four tyres are the things that are on the road and if you cannot get them working then nothing else really matters."

He added: "We know getting the tyres to work is important, so we come here this weekend positive, as we should be, and we are going to test a few things that we had on the car in the earlier races, do some comparisons between both cars and on both cars, and we will see how it goes.

"By the end of tomorrow we might put our hands up and go, we really do not know why we still cannot get the tyres working, but I am positive that we know the reasons and we can get the car back to where it was. It is not we can improve the car, it is understanding the issues and getting the car back to where it was three races ago where the car felt good – and then you can see the improvements that you have made with the car.

"So it is a strange situation, but even if the track is cool here this weekend I am hoping and I really feel that we can get this car working and get the tyres working – but we will not know until after tomorrow. It all sounds great in the engineering office, and I believe them that this is the direction we need to take, but we will see tomorrow."

Button declined, however, to reveal what area the team has focused on to help its tyre issues though.

"I think it's better for us to leave it as it is at the moment and just get on with the weekend. After the weekend we might tell you."

Brawn GP - Season Progress Report

With the summer break now on us we have no F1 to look forward to for 4 weeks. There will be plenty of speculation flying around to keep us amused as usual and like me I'm sure many of F1's fans will take this time to reflect on Felipe's condition, the circumstances leading to it and the future for him.

I thought I would take this opportunity to look back at the season so far and try to understand why Brawn's performance now seems to have dropped in comparison to it's rivals.

It would appear to me as an outsider that a number of things have contributed to Brawn's performance deficit and not simply a 1 component fix. Red Bull and McLaren more than anyone have reaped the rewards of constant development whilst Brawn GP already had the package to beat and the one to learn most from. Red Bull's successful introduction of the double decker diffuser has been fruitful and i'm sure highlighted other area's to Newey and his team of designers that will have given them the huge leap forward. McLaren on the other hand seem to chuck parts at the car to start with and really gain no net result. They learnt from this mistake and bought a massive update to the Nurburgring updating Lewis's car giving theirselves a good shout at a podium finish. It would appear that McLaren have struggled to measure the overall aerodynamic disadvantage that carrying around the KERS system made. They have seemingly removed this obstacle now and understand how this both affects their car and can still be used to create an advantage.

The BGP001 was famed for being kind on it's tyres which has been the reasoning why at Silverstone and Nurburgring the car struggled in colder temperatures with the drivers struggling to put heat through the tyres. At Hungary we were supposed to see a return to warmer weather and less degradation on the BGP001 to it's competitors. This however didn't occur and begs the question have the new suspension geometry upgrades that were bought to the car inherently removed it's advantage of being kind to the tyres.
What we all have to remember is that the combination of both the BGP001 and the Mercedes powerplant although a good fit is still a compromise that other teams are not having to work around.

Upgrade delays could also have hindered progress somewhat, with limited testing this year adding components to cars during Friday test and running numbers of laps has really been the only way to get solid answers back from upgrades. I've already alluded to the problem this caused McLaren above. Silverstone has caused a domino effect in this area when the scheduled upgrades were run on the Friday but no accurate data could be found due to the weather conditions and the upgrades dropped until Nurburgring.
The astute amongst us will also notice some upgrades that seem to get run in testing and never making it to the car due to their impact not being sufficient.
Case in point see the pictures below for a section of raised bodywork that has made its way to friday practice at both Silverstone & Nurburgring but not made it onto the car for Qually or the Race:

Furthermore there may be some upgrades that have been added to the car that have made the car inherently faster but maybe not as balanced and thus are creating the tyre issues we have seen. The one piece rear movable element on the front wing springs to mind when before we saw only the triangular component could be moved.

OLD

NEW

I remain unmoved in my assumption that Brawn GP can win the constructors championship but until some of the above issues are addressed it may be McLarens meteoric rise that hinders Red Bull and helps BGP.

Expect Jenson to stop 3-4 laps afterthe surrounding cars with Rubens looking like the only driver that could make a 1 stop providing he can nurse the tyres that distance. Perhaps even a long first stint on softs followed by 2 much shorter super soft stints could give him clear air and good track position throughout. Meanwhile Jenson is heavier than all that surround him which could play outboth ways for him strategically.

Brawn GP - Hungary - Qualifying

A very confusing end to qualifying caused by a loss of timings left me somewhat bewildered. The net result of Rubens damaged rear suspension appears to be what caused the Filipe incident and I'm sure as I am you will all be wishing him well. Jenson came out in 8th whilst Rubens finished the session down in 12th. I await the fuel loads.....

Brawn GP - Nurburgring - Ross & Drivers Quotes

Jenson Button: "The Nürburgring is a tricky circuit but there are two key characteristics which should be good for our car. It is a relatively slow circuit with a lot of medium-speed corners which are one of the strengths of the BGP 001. The Nürburgring is also one of the heaviest braking circuits on the calendar so you need a car which will be good through the four heavy braking zones. With the extra week's break, everyone at the factory and at Mercedes-Benz High Performance Engines has been working extremely hard in preparation for the German Grand Prix to get the best package for the race and we're looking forward to showing what the car can do at the Nürburgring after a disappointing weekend by our standards at the British Grand Prix. My last stint at Silverstone showed that the pace of the car is really competitive so we're confident that we can turn it around at this race. I'm sure we will see a really intense fight with our closest competitors and hopefully a great race for the fans."

Rubens Barrichello: "I have always enjoyed racing at the Nürburgring and it provides a good challenge for the drivers. The layout and flow is nice which allows you to get into a rhythm and there are some interesting undulations and bumps to look out for. I won the race here back in 2002 so the circuit always holds some good memories for me. The weather can be a little unpredictable due to its location right in the Eifel Mountains but we'll be hoping for some warmer temperatures than we saw at Silverstone for the last race. The first corner here is really important to set yourself up for a good lap and it's a bumpy run down from the start line. You have to get your approach absolutely right and position yourself well for a good exit. However, it is also one of the best overtaking opportunities if the cars around you slide straight on so you need to be alert to take advantage of any opportunities. Many of the corners at the Nürburgring are off-camber so getting the correct line for your corner entry is important all round the lap. We haven't raced here for a couple of years so it will be interesting to see how the circuit feels in a good car."

Ross Brawn:
"The team is looking forward to returning to the race track at the German Grand Prix next weekend and the Nürburgring should be a good circuit for our car and play to its strengths. We have several new aerodynamic parts from Silverstone which were not used in qualifying and the race due to the issues that we faced there, along with additional improvements scheduled for the Nürburgring, which should position us well going into the weekend. Whilst coming away with third and sixth placed finishes from Silverstone was still a good outcome from our home Grand Prix, we would be the first to admit that the result did not meet our expectations. However we have always said that we would have a fight on our hands to maintain our excellent run of results at the start of the season and everyone at the factory and at Mercedes-Benz High Performance Engines in Brixworth is looking forward to that challenge. As a team, we have a good history of going away from a race, thinking about the outcome, identifying where we need to make improvements and then coming back stronger. As the home Grand Prix for Mercedes-Benz, we will be hoping to come away from the race in Germany next weekend with a successful result."

Brawn GP - Nurburgring Beckons

Silverstone saw Red Bull come to the fore but was this down to a giant leap forward by RBR or simply down to the cold weather conditions at the Northampton Circuit. Brawn GP ran some upgrades for the Friday practice sessions but decided not to implement them for the race due to the cold weather conditions the components must have shown no conclusive effect. The wind on friday was also playing havoc with setup. Below is a picture showing the bulbous mounds on the bulkhead (similar to the RB5 varients) and the different front wing endplates.

Updates have always been on the agenda for Nurburgring according to Ross so these combined with the late Silverstone updates could provide a giant leap forward. The problem with bringing so many updates however could be quantifying each parts net gain/deficiency.

"With the confusion over the tyres, we didn't run some new pieces we had because Friday [at Silverstone] was very difficult with the tyre temperature. We couldn't determine how the new bits were working, so we decided to avoid confusion and went back to what we had in Turkey."
"So we've got those bits and we have some new improvements for the Nurburgring."

Red Bulls large leap forward could be seen as a master stroke by RBR and Adrian Newey or simply that their car responds better to colder temperatures. I firmly believe the latter to be more the case as their car seems to be more stup to provide downforce from the top of the car rather than beneath like the BGP001.

"It has always been a strong car aerodynamically and at Silverstone in the slow medium speed stuff, we didn't take the return we normally could because the tyres were cold," he said. "So when we got to the complex there wasn't enough temperature in the tyres for our normal advantages to come through in that area."
"But we probably need to see a bit more in normal conditions to really judge it - a race where we are comfortable we are performing how we should be."

I expect to see a much closer battle between BGP and RBR come Germany as equalisation of weather permitations and updates come to fruition.

Further from that news has just come through that Bridgstone are to use consecutive Tyre compounds in the next 4 races, this should further play into BGP's hands as the tyres will operate more effectively.

About Me

I have been an F1 fan from a very early age, however in my very early years I didn't really support a team just loved the racing. Since the BAR years I have been supporting this team through it's highs and lows. I'm confident under Ross Brawn's control the team will go from strength to strength and hopefully Jenson and Rubens can find themselves in a competitive car once more.
